2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Opens Up to L.A. Sun – 2012 L.A

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Opens Up to L.A. Sun – 2012 L.A It was so sunny at the Volkswagen stand, you had to wear the shades it handed out to unsuspecting journalists prior to its press conference announcing the new 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. While without a doubt the brightest, whitest display at the 2012 L.A. show, the sunglasses instead were distributed so everyone could ‘see’ (gimmick alert!) VW’s presentation announcing the world debut of the new Beetle Convertible lineup.

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Opens Up to L.A. Sun – 2012 L.A

Volkswagen’s U.S. CEO Jonathan Browning made no bones about how important the Beetle and by extension the convertible is to VW, calling the drop-top a ‘cherished part of the American cultural fabric.’ To that end the German automaker rolled out multiple special edition models of the new roofless Beetle to the stage with nostalgia in mind.
Dubbed 50s (black outside, tan inside), 60s with ‘groovy’ (yes, they used that word in the press release) two-tone seats and Denim Blue paint, and 70s (Toffee Brown with chrome disc wheels), the models are designed to celebrate the long and storied history of the drop-top Bug that started back in 1949 with the type 15 Convertible. All three special editions will be available when the new Beetle Convertible goes on sale this December with a price starting at $25,790 including destination.
When you want to lower the 2013 Beetle Convertible’s top (it comes in brown or black), it will go down in just 9.5 seconds. If you for some reason you have to put it up, it will do it in just 11 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 31 mph.
Like the Beetle coupe, the convertible will be available with VW’s 2.5-liter four mated to a six-speed automatic as the base model. The 2.0-liter turbo four and the 2.0-liter diesel with a 41 mpg highway rating are available with either a six-speed manual or VW’s DSG transmission.
Being a convertible, rollover protection is a must, and the drop-top Bug comes with VW’s Automatic Rollover Support System. The vehicle has been further reinforced by strengthening the front roof crossmember and A-pillar. For a convertible, its 7.1 cubic feet of trunk space is downright copious, and its split folding rear seat enables even more cargo functionality.
Like the Beetle coupe, the Convertible is available with a host of styling, entertainment, telematics options depending on trim level, including the brand’s much-hyped Fender audio system. During the presentation, Volkswagen also announced that it would be rolling out an R-Line edition of Beetle Coupe next spring with 19-inch wheels and other R-Line touches.
